Conservative-controlled Calderdale Council officially has a 'rubbish record' on recycling after new figures revealed they are the worst performing local authority in the region.

The council recycles a pitiful 25% of household waste - half that of the best performing local authority in Yorkshire and Humberside.

The statistics were issued this week by the Department of the Environment to outline how individual councils were performing.

Linda has hit out at Calderdale Council's performance saying they had got their priorities wrong on waste management issues.

Linda said: "We have had one fiasco after the other on environmental issues. First the excellent Kerbside organisation was treated appallingly, then the whole waste management contract was badly handled. And now Calderdale is officially the worst performing council in Yorkshire on recycling. It is not a record for the Tory-controlled council to be proud of.

"Clearly, Conservative Councillors are not fit to be running this service. They have bungled from one mistake to another and have taken their eye off the ball.

"I am pleased that the Government has said they will step in and help poor performing local authorities to do better. I hope that Calderdale takes up this offer. The fact that 75% of household waste in the district is not being recycled is a terrible statistic.

"It's not that people don't want to recycle, it's just that the service they are receiving from the Conservative Council isn't good enough.

"If similar sized local authorities to Calderdale can recycle nearly 50% of their household waste, then there's no excuse for the council's own figures to be so lamentably low."
